BFA Essay

BFA Essay by Shae Young

My parents made their living painting windows at car dealerships, fast food restaurants, and all of the local Piano Gallery. My Great Grandfather was Lee K. Parkinson who made his living making oil paintings and my grandmother was an art professor at Utah Valley University. After years of barely scraping by my father taught himself Adobe and coding, this lead to the start of their graphic design business.
My love for art began in grade school with drawing and as I have progressed through my education my skill sets have radically expanded thanks to the guidance of my instructors. As I observed my parent’s love for graphic design, I began seeking their knowledge of Adobe. After pursuing a degree in medicine and my curiosity for knowledge, I found my passion just wasn’t in the sciences.  This lead me back to what my real passion was, graphic design and the arts.  After completing my foundation classes, as well as the multiple others that I have taken, I feel the knowledge and experience has prepared me for the graphic design program. These skills, mixed with my desire for learning, have made me an excellent fit for the program.  Drawing, being my most used medium, has seen the greatest improvement, especially since my start here at Weber. I have also added collage, digital, 2D, 3D, as well as photographic pieces to my body of works.  I have acquired knowledge in Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, InDesign software as well as color theory and good design practices. Using these skills I have designed a logo for a local church’s Youth Ministry as well as the T-shirts for University of Utah ARUP Phlebotomists.
I look forward to learning how to further improve my art and design as well as the challenges that designing for a range of clients will bring.  My journey thus far has been stimulating and eye opening and I have not left a single course empty handed. There is still so much that I have yet to learn and experience which surely this program will provide me with. I am excited to work closely with the professors I have had the privilege to learn under, as well as some new one’s I have not yet had the advantage of being instructed by.  Thank you for taking the time to go over my application and I look forward to seeing you all again in the future.
